Welcome to the online home of
Cornerstone Quilts

Dear Friends, May, June, July 2009
I opened Cornerstone Quilts because of my love of fabrics and creating, and I wanted to share this with a community of quilters. I enjoy every aspect of creating a quilt, from choosing the fabrics to deciding how to quilt it. There are times when a new fabric line comes in, it speaks to us and we know exactly what pattern to use for the shop sample. Once in a while we use the manufacturer’s project sheets, but most of the time we choose our own patterns. Then there are times when we purchase a line of fabric and it is silent. It sits and stares at us and we stare back. Ever have that feeling? It doesn’t matter; I still love what I do.
I get out my favorite Singer Featherweight 221 (Tina) because I love the smell of it. (I name my favorite sewing machines.) Jenny Matilda is my long arm machine and yes, it smells good, too. They’re like old friends.
I was rather closed minded when it came to piecing. I didn’t appliqué, paper piece (yuk), do hand work (double yuk) or use my embroidery machine for machine embroidery. I used my very expensive embroidery machine for (any guesses?) straight piecing. Sound like anyone you know?
Now, I like machine appliqué and we’re about to start a machine appliqué block of the month. I really enjoy paper piecing and have taught several classes. But my all time favorite is machine embroidery – I love it. Combine beautiful machine embroidery blocks with quilt making and you open up new possibilities for creating gorgeous quilts.
OK, I’m about to land the plane. The shop has been open four years now and guess what the most popular and best attended classes that we have on our schedule are…yup, machine embroidery. I would never have guessed it would be so popular.
The moral of the story is not to turn your nose up until you’ve tried it. You might
just end up loving it. Try new things, sew outside of your box. If you've been
thinking about getting into machine embroidery, come in and see what we’re up to.
April embroidery club made tissue holders (purse size) and scissor holders out of
dupioni silk and embellished them with crystals using a hot fix tool. These items
make perfect gifts. Our May embroidery club will be making stand-
We’ve added some one day classes for your enjoyment and I would highly recommend the mitten class. Our guest teacher, Colleen, will be showing you how to make a beautiful pair of mittens out of a recycled wool sweater embellished with felting yarn and wool roving. They’re perfect for Christmas gifts so start visiting your favorite thrift store for these treasures and sign up for class.
Enjoy the newsletter, use your coupons and come see us.
